T.O.P.S. @ GESS Trustworthy, Open-minded Peer Support
Peer groups at schools are a powerful factor for children to feel a positive connection with their environment and develop resilience skills. The T.O.P.S. @ GESS is a peer support program that was launched this academic year to train young peer leaders on the skills needed to address social issues and develop leadership skills.
Peer leaders in grades 5, 7 and 8 were trained on modules that were designed to equip children with skills to deal with everyday life situations through a resilience lens. Our grade 5 students were busy this year learning about their own leadership skills and how to support their peers in various situations. Our Secondary students were able to provide resilience-based in class lessons to their peers in grade 6. They discussed the importance of communication skills, finding support when needed, and being a positive influence on others.
